FROM KOLAJ #19

Grassroots Discourse

Etty Yaniv writes in Kolaj #19, "The rules of the Brooklyn Collage Collective are pretty hardcore. Otherwise

Marsha Balian & Sherry Parker at GearBox Gallery in Oakland, California though 27 July 2017. Balian builds on each collage as improvisation, letting the sense and direction of each piece unfold intuitively. Parker’s impeccably crafted collages have much in common with classic Surrealism, with their shadowy landscapes and anthropomorphic hybrids. MORE

Leonardo Marino
São Paulo, Brazil

Marino uses collage as a way of escaping from the chaos of work and routine. He describes how he got started, "It all started among my friends, when I used to make artwork based on three words they would pick, just for fun, combining digital art and traditional collage, grouping these three elements and giving it a place in a new universe. A lover of photography and graphic design, I try to unite these as a form of expression." MORE

The 5th biennial found objects competition at the Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis through 16 July. Juror Janet Maher writes, "The stacking of common forms removed from their intended role; a grid of transparency drawings in bottles; the juxtaposing of objects well past their prime in order that they be brought back to life again as if in a newfound community; combinations of both low and high art processes in elegant balance all intrigued me.
