What is World Collage Day?

Collage Rocks! We love collage so much, six years ago we created a magazine dedicated to contemporary collage.

Collage connects our eyes, our minds, and the muscles in our hands. Collage is accessible and democratic. All you need is some paper, some glue, and a pair of scissors. Collage gets us thinking differently. In the past 100 years, the medium has played a vital role in the advancement of art. Enthusiastic groups of artists come together to make collage regularly. Collage builds communities. Collage makes beautiful contemporary art.

"Part of what makes collage unique in the art world today is the enthusiastic, dedicated, friendly group of people who come together as a community. In the past six years of publishing Kolaj, we have seen countless collaborations, group exhibitions, meet-ups, and events," writes Ric Kasini Kadour in Kolaj #22. "On a regular basis we witness dialogue and a spirit of cooperation and care for one another. Sometimes the art world can be cold, competitive, money-driven, and frankly inhumane. But in this corner of it where artists hang out and make and share collage, we often find the opposite. We think that is awesome and we think the rest of the world should know about it."

To celebrate collage, Kolaj Magazine declares Saturday, May 12, 2018 World Collage Day.

We invite artists, art centres, museums, galleries, schools, and communities to celebrate the day by hosting events that bring communities together. Ideas include collage making meet-ups, docent-led tours of collage in a museum or gallery, activities for kids, slideshows or talks that appreciate collage's role in contemporary art & art history, exhibitions of collage, and more. We invite people to come together around collage in their own communities and to connect to the world digitally using the hashtag #WorldCollageDay.

Destockage massif
Exhibition Opening

Le Pavillon des Canaux
39 quai de la Loire
75019 Paris, France

"Destockage massif" (massive clearance sale) is a series of absurd and distressing collages by Jérôme Sachs that runs from 12 May to 31 May 2018. Sachs tears, cuts and reassembles free newspapers, flyers and brochures, things found in waiting rooms: in short, the country where life is cheaper. Everything is for sale and everything is at the same reading level: Men, women, everyday objects, fashion, food, clearance items and luxury items meet at the turnstile of flavours. Sachs likes Outsider Art, Jacques Prévert, Topor, Jean Christophe Averty, record sleeves covered in scribbles, drawings on tablecloths, any art made outside of the official framework. All of his analogue collages are handmade. Sachs is the founder of the collective and agency, Studioburo, in Paris. ARTIST WEBSITE

Experimental Collage Workshop

Distrito Diez
Av. Hipodromo, 15-E, Col. Hipodromo
22024 Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico

Cut and paste, assemble and disassemble. A journey through paper where everything is possible, where there are no limits and imagination is the protagonist. Experimenting through the assembling of different elements often leads us to universes where ingenuity and fantasy break the rules of visual logic by assigning a new perceptual discourse. In this experimental collage workshop, the participant will be able to play with all the elements that come up and be able to make their own compositions without limit. The workshop is free and open to those aged 15 and over. WEBSITE

Kolaj Fest New Orleans made possible through a generous gift from Laurie and Doug Kanyer.

What is Kolaj Fest New Orleans?

Kolaj Fest New Orleans is a multi-day festival and symposium about contemporary collage and its role in art, culture, and society, July 12-15, 2018. Our mission is to create a platform that allows us to explore critical issues around collage (how it is curated and presented, its role in contemporary art, and the tensions between collage as a medium, a genre, and a phenomenon). Our goal is to create an event that attracts a variety of people working in various capacities, such as art professionals at museums, galleries, and centers as well as academics, writers, and artists. The general public will be welcome to join us for gallery visits, evening presentations, and collage making.

Kolaj Magazine is a quarterly, printed magazine about contemporary collage.

Kolaj #22 delivers a look at the wonderful world of contemporary collage: the people who make it and the people who love it. Belgian artist Strook‘s building-sized collage is on the cover of the issue. In her profile of the artist, Etty Yaniv writes, "The found wood pieces Strook fuses in his assemblages and the imagery he depicts in his collaged paintings manifest an act of revival: allocating fragmented elements of decay by making an artistic use for them and out of them."
