FROM THE PRINT EDITION Collage PaintingKolaj #18 features the most recent installment in the magazine's ongoing series about collage taxonomy. What happens when collage artists arrange fragments into a compositional whole where the gestalt of the picture is the art? We suggest this should be called “collage painting”. The term comes to us from Carole Bleistein, who defines collage painting with great precision. MORE The Collage Taxonomy Project is an ongoing survey of the wider collage community that attempts to define the language we use to talk about collage. Visit the project’s website to suggest words or contribute definitions. |
COLLAGE ON VIEW Contemporary CollageAt Site:Brooklyn through 19 March 2017. By taking existing things and making them new and strange, “Cut and Paste: Contemporary Collage” affords a multitude of new ways of looking at concept, subject matter, and material. Drawing on a wide range of artists, the exhibition presents figurative alongside abstract works and multimedia experiments next to black-and-white cutouts. This show is a collective reaction to the increasingly fragmentary nature of our world, from the ubiquity of the Internet to the seemingly fractured nature of reality itself. The artwork was selected by the highly respected Metropolitan Museum of Art Specialist, Jared Ash. MORE |
