FROM THE ARTIST DIRECTORY

Michael Toti
Avon, Connecticut

One of the things I like about collage is the process of combining images and developing a new interpretation of the original form. For me, the process is about searching, looking at image after image and trying to find the connections between one image and the other. Sometimes there is an epiphany, but most times it simply involves time and work to find the right parts to fulfill the vision in my head and sometimes the images I find will alter the direction. COLLAGE ON VIEW

Beyond, Within

Malin Gabriella Nordin at Mini Galerie in Amsterdam through 29 April 2017. “Beyond, Within” reveals new series of drawings, collages and paintings that Malin Gabriella Nordin created over the past year. She makes the artworks intuitively, doesn’t adhere to limitations and rarely has a preconceived idea of how or when a piece will reach completion. She likens her practice to a game of “telephone”, in which the work in question is constantly shifting in form and meaning during its progression. MORE

I am the heads I come across

Gabrièle Fontana at Ymuno Exhibitions in Montreal, Quebec through 29 April 2017. The artist says about the work: "This project starts with a memory. Night train between Geneva and Amsterdam, long ago. The outside world is absent. Alone in a compartment, my face endlessly reflected in the windowpanes. The same. The same. The same. Smothering. I need a way out, right away, to another. The Other. Its difference will save me from confinement. It’s then everything started." MORE

Reclaiming Motherhood

Catherine Mellinger uses collage to ease postpartum depression. In Kolaj #18, Mellinger writes about her work using collage to help mothers. She writes, "My goal when I started the Postpartum Therapeutic Arts Group at the Kitchener Downtown Community Centre was clear and simple. I wanted to allow women to create their own visual narrative with other mothers who had similar postpartum experiences." Catherine Mellinger is an analogue collage artist and mixed media artist whose works explore dichotomy by seeking to create works of beauty whose themes are not beautiful: trauma, loss and challenging relational dynamics that are familial, social, moral, political. Adhesives

Atlanta Collage Society at Artists Atelier Gallery & Studios in Atlanta, Georgia through 30 April 2017. "This will be the second show by the Atlanta Collage Society at the Artists Atelier gallery," said Ellen Kierr Stein, president of the Atlanta Collage Society. "We are calling this show ‘Adhesives’ to highlight the basic element of collage, which is glue, and that as artists we are connected to one another through the shared bonds of originality and creativity, individuality and diversity."
