FROM THE ARTIST DIRECTORY

Lucie Bosquin
Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Growing up in Belgium, I was a flea market kid. I have fond memories of getting up at the crack of dawn with my dad to hunt for treasures and nab the best finds. I’ve always evolved in spaces that valued old over new, and my golden rule is to keep my creations analog. Using old magazines (40s-70s) gleaned from bazaars and markets, I aim to transport the viewer into a world of adventure, imagination, and kitsch, exploring the course of humanity and its mutations. Free Speech Zone

Damla Özdemir at Gallery Ilayda in Istanbul, Turkey, 26 May-23 June 2017. Özdemir distinguishes herself among the younger generation of artists with collages based on stop-motion animation techniques and digital art practices. Presenting a selection from Özdemir’s most recent works, the show focuses on the existential possibilities of expression. It is a result of the artist’s questioning of the connections and contrasts between individuals’ sense of belonging and freedom. The artist’s use of the collage technique, which brings together various elements that appear as if they wouldn’t work together, let alone create a visually pleasing composition, also makes use of the unlimited possibilities offered by today’s digital world, which constantly bombards our senses. FROM KOLAJ #19

Get Together

In his Kolaj #19 editorial, Ric Kasini Kadour rails against the myth of the lonely artist. He writes, "Too often we talk about art as the product of independent genius. The artist, as mythical figure, toils alone in their studio to weave a golden thread of creativity into a magnificent oeuvre. In only the rarest, most tragic instances is this true. Most artists, and in particular most great artists, surround themselves with smart, intuitive, thoughtful people with whom they engage on a regular basis. Good art is inherently social and the production of art is a community-based activity." MORE

Layers of Little Alterations

Linden Eller spent her youth in the urban Sonoran desert of Phoenix, Arizona before moving to Southern California to study drawing and painting. She’s since lived and worked out of New England, Europe, India, Australia, and Samoa. Auckland, New Zealand is currently where she makes her home. An interest in place attracted her to the medium of collage, which she uses to communicate the melancholy in unresolved matters, like her brother’s autism, or natural losses. Eller was featured in Collage Artist Trading Cards Pack 6. We asked her some questions about her work. MORE

Reality Check

Ernst and Rosa at ArtWall Project Space in Athens, Greece through 1 June 2017. ArtWall Project Space hosts four contemporary Austrian and Greek artists who approach reality, personal differences, individual and social problems imposed by Western thought, from a different perspective. Central figures “Ernst and Rosa” suggest the unresolved “problems” of our time to which they must answer. Their individuality creates confusion and misunderstanding between them. MORE
