Happy New Year!

With the holidays behind us, it's time to get back to work. Thank you for being a part of the Kolaj community. Whether you subscribe to the print magazine, follow our social media, or read these electronic newsletters, your support of this magazine makes it a joy to publish.

While Kolaj is primarily a print magazine, over the years, we have developed a number of projects that study the medium and help us to develop content for the magazine and the website. These include things like Collage Books, Collage Artist Trading Cards, Collage Taxonomy, and a vivacious online presence that shares information about calls to artists, exhibitions, meet-ups, collaborations, and projects. If you want to dive deeper and learn more about the project, check out this post HERE.

If you want to be featured in Kolaj Magazine, we are pleased to offer "How To Kolaj", a primer for artists seeking coverage in the magazine. Take a moment to check it out and bookmark the page for future reference.

In addition to a year's worth of magazines to publish, we have a number of initiatives coming up in 2018. We are particularly excited about a soon to be announced exhibition and event in New Orleans and some events in Europe that are in the works.

We look forward to another year of this wonderful world of collage.

FROM KOLAJ #21

Collage from Tbilisi

In Kolaj 21, Etty Yaniv reports on four artists making collage in the former Soviet republic of Georgia. "The country’s complex history is evident in its contemporary art, and notably in collage-oriented artworks. As a young state with an ancient culture and far-reaching history, it is a place in transition and this state of flux is reflected in the work of four contemporary Georgian artists who express their unique sense of place and history through a wide range of collage-related sensibilities." CALL TO ARTISTS

Unnatural Symmetry

Deadline: Sunday, 14 January 2018. At The Yards Collective in the Rochester Public Market, Rochester, New York. Sponsored by the Rochester Collage Society. The society is hosting a collage exhibition as a way of creating a platform. "Unnatural Symmetry" is an exploration of the odd balances we come across in life. “The world is full of shapes, concepts, and truths which sit on opposite sides of an axis which seems to find balance, yet we are left to question how that balance is achieved.” MORE

FROM THE ARTIST DIRECTORY

Inas Al-Soqi
Queens, New York

Half Palestinian and half Romanian, Inas Al-soqi’s work draws upon the cultural diversity she encounters on her trips around the world, as well as her own diverse background. The hand-cut collages play with the viewer’s senses to evoke an ironic sense of class, nobility, and sensibility through vibrant patterns of Eastern culture, early colonial influences and politics. FROM KOLAJ #21

Collage Doesn’t Have to Resemble Reality

Old bank notes mingle with vintage illustrations. Browned newspapers serve as a backdrop to assorted 20th century office ephemera. Occasionally, a photograph makes an appearance. Katinka Hanselman says her favourite subjects are travelling, culture, nature and the past; something which is evident in her collage. Selections from this series appear in Kolaj #21. MORE
