COLLAGE ON VIEW Salon des RefusésLezley Saar at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles through 18 February 2018. Saar works with paint, fabric, photographs, and found objects to investigate issues such as hybridity, identity, and acceptance. Her oeuvre, which employs a distinctive visual vocabulary, is multilayered in terms of materials, execution, meaning, and intellectual complexity. Saar’s recurring depiction of persons outside the realm of what is commonly believed to be “normal”–be it defined in physical, mental, neurological, sexual, or racial terms–is distilled from her lifelong personal experiences as an artist born and based in Los Angeles. COLLAGE ON VIEW PartidaLeticia Polaco at Elsi del Rio Arte Contemporeano in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 14 February-15 March 2018. Think, cut, arm, disarm and fragment. Re-arm, compose, create. Polaco makes collages in which she builds life stories. In her work, she uses found images that she places delicately on paper to tell us short stories with deep meanings about herself and others. Many of these stories are about fragmented women. They are marked by culture and by language, a spear that pierces the body and soul. They oscillate between happiness and sadness, innocence and adulthood, pain and joy, health and illness, light and darkness. MORE |

COLLAGE ON VIEW Compositions EmergeColin Talcroft at Mario Uribe’s Seishin Studio in Santa Rosa, California through 19 February 2018. Colin Talcroft says about his work, "I paint with abandon on paper, cut the paintings up and glue them back together in new ways, or I paint on paper and use still-wet colours to print onto other sheets of paper that I then manipulate, or I make monoprints (pressing paper directly onto colours spread on glass) and these monoprints become the raw material for my collages." COLLAGE ON VIEW Urban PassageSusan Reedy at Anna Kaplan Contemporary in Buffalo, New York, 10 February-17 March 2018. Susan Reedy’s art lies at the intersection of painting, drawing, and collage. Reedy’s practice is process oriented, involving many layers of material and visual information. The result is a complex surface with many subtleties that reveals itself over time. By selecting overlooked objects, Reedy’s practice transforms and elevates essentially discarded ephemera, once functional in our society, now obsolete as we shift from analog to digital forms of communication.
