FROM THE ARTIST DIRECTORY

Holly Savas
San Francisco, California

The artist writes, "My favourite part of being an artist is finding a way to distill everything I absorb from my environment–the shapes of buildings I see downtown, the light and shadows of trees in Golden Gate Park or the colours of the beach–into a small, concentrated dose of my experiences. It’s very satisfying to look at a collection of my completed collages and revisit the sensory memories contained in them, all through a filter that exaggerates the best of what I experienced or that perhaps even replaces what I actually saw, with what I wish I had seen." COLLAGE ON VIEW

Collages from Captiva

LeBrie Rich at Luke’s Frame Shop-Albina in Portland, Oregon through 28 February 2018. The collage on view were made at the Rauschenberg Residency in Captiva, Florida. This artist residency was such a potent experience for her, that it has taken the last two years to process the experience and be ready to show this work. The collages are infused with Captiva both literally and figuratively. Rich inked up leaves of plants that grow on the property and printed them to use as collage papers. Their essence attempts to capture the dense richness that was five weeks of living and working on a tropical island with a cohort of artists that have become some of her dearest friends and collaborators. Journey

Joani Share at Olson Realty Gallery in Benicia, California through 13 April 2018 The artist writes, "The human figure is my creative source of imagery. My figurative work is purposefully ambiguous. 'Characters' in my paintings are often not explicit as to gender, race, colour, ethnicity, etc. Rather, my paintings encourage the viewers to make these determinations for themselves. I work on both canvas and paper and incorporate a wide variety of unique materials that I collage and manipulate to create the imagery. My surfaces may be layered with acrylics, inks, graphite and mixed media allowing for a richness of design and composition." MORE

Lost in Garbage

Group show at the Verbeke Foundation in Kemzeke, Belgium through 14 April 2018. The exhibition showcases artists of different generations who use waste as an artistic medium and a substantive starting point. Their works are presented through collages and assemblies from the collection of the Verbeke Foundation, in which waste is used as an important visual language. The exhibition focuses on artists who see the garbage as an inexhaustible source in which to lose oneself completely, something to be cherished instead of discarded. MORE

We the People

American Art of Social Concern at Ulrich Museum of Art in Wichita, Kansas through 25 March 2018. Since the mid-19th century, artists have voiced the need for greater awareness and progress toward addressing social concerns such as sexism, economic inequality, and political corruption. The works of art presented in the exhibition span from the McCarthy era of the 1950s and continue to the social issues of today. One of those works is a large, 1970s oil and collage work by Benny Andrews (a detail of which appears here). MORE
