FROM KOLAJ #23 Paper PositionsWhen we visit fairs, we see collage playing a critical role at the forefront of contemporary art, so much so that reviews of collage at fairs are frequent features of this magazine. And yet, in the press releases about art fairs that parade across our desks, it is strikingly uncommon that they mention collage. It was refreshing that in the announcement for the Berlin edition of Paper Positions in May 2018, organizers specifically called out the medium. MORE |
COLLAGE ON VIEW State DinnerBean Gilsdorf at Anytime Dept. in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA through 26 August 2018. Anytime Dept. presents a solo exhibition by the San Francisco-based artist Bean Gilsdorf. Expanding upon her decade-long practice of transforming images culled from mass-market history books, Gilsdorf presents a suite of works (all 2018) that investigate political "soft power" and the ways in which it is both produced and mediated by iconographic imagery. In the front gallery, sculptures representing the past nine first ladies of the United States occupy the walls and part of the floor. Like three-dimensional collages, the individual sculptures are composed from several images, and each FLOTUS is depicted in a garment that references her White House apparel. MORE |
COLLAGE ON VIEW IncisionesFrancisco Toro at Galeria Espacio 5 del Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura Tijuana, Mexico through 3 September 2018. Toro presents a selection of collage works made between 2016 and 2018. Toro makes delicate cuts to remove the fabric that will be part of various compositions, which allows for the the construction of characters that go from a life to universes that break the rules of visual logic to assign a new perceptive speech. The exhibition includes topics such as the perception of reality, identity, escape from being, absence, mental saturation and death. Sometimes, the artist chooses specific materials to communicate the main idea. At other times, through play, the main character of the collage chooses his own destiny. MORE |
FROM KOLAJ #23 New Gallery in Hastings Heavy on CollageElla Matthews' See Spray Gallery in Hastings, England opened in June 2018 and has been showing a steady stream of collage. Why show collage? Matthews said, "…partially because there is a lack of such work being shown in other galleries in Hastings, partially because of the scope of collage as an art form, and partially because I personally like them."
