The Illogic of a Dream

Stephen Schaub at The Artist Book Foundation in North Adams, Massachusetts, USA, through 1 February 2019. In Schaub's monumental artwork, rather than experiencing a literal place or a linear story, viewers encounter something akin to the fragmentation of a memory or the illogic of a dream. The images may be evocative, lyrical, and, at times, haunting. Schaub says these recent works were "inspired by the light and the energy of this iconic, sweeping space." In the creation of the negative, overlapping frames and multiple-exposures are used to evoke an almost cinematic sense of time and motion. MORE

Cut and Paste

At the Arts Fund Community Gallery of Santa Barbara, California, USA, through 11 January 2019. Curated by artist and educator Dug Uyesaka, this exhibition is a broad survey of the art form and how collage came alive with the influence of Santa Barbara artist William Dole (1917–1983). An internationally recognized collagist, Dole was an educator, mentor and inspiration for many artists from the 1940s to the present. The exhibition shows a wide range of area artists who utilize collage as one of their main modes of creative expression. They run the gamut from the traditional joining of paper to paper to the digital and alternative techniques illustrating the extent and breadth of the medium. MORE

Infinity of Worlds

Erika Lawlor Schmidt at BigTown Gallery in Rochester, Vermont, USA, through 8 December 2018. Schmidt has shaped a career as a visual and performing artist whose work is deeply shaped by investigations into Eastern philosophy and Indian mysticism. She writes, "Incongruous observation and experience have been prevailing threads running through my work. When making collage, I am delighted to find myself at the center of a vortex…an excavator of mystery and potentiality. The collage series "Infinity of Worlds" offers intimate musings about the collective unconscious, about time as ephemeral, and about the interconnectedness of all living things. My work speaks to an understanding and urgency to pay attention to the vulnerability and sustainability of earth. Essential to my work is recognition of fragile connections." MORE

COLLAGE ARTIST TRADING CARDS

Open the Chute & Provoke the Intuitive

From Dublin, Ireland, Una Gildea writes, "I juxtapose recognizable found images and transformed cutouts into pictorial narratives that invite the viewer to apply their own stories. Narratives at once oddly recognizable, yet uncomfortably odd; narratives often downright obscene, whilst pushing the chuckle-button; narratives that always aim to open the chute direct to the subconscious, that provoke an intuitive, not literal, sense, of what’s going on." Gildea’s collage, Trinity, is featured in Collage Artist Trading Cards Pack 8. MORE

The Changeable Nature of Identity

From San Francisco, California, USA, Julie Blankenship’s mixed media works explore history, loss and the changeable nature of identity in the context of an increasingly industrialized environment. In her current series, she uses small, found carte de visite photographs and cabinet cards from the second half of the nineteenth century. She peels, cuts up and layers the images using collage techniques, and then heavily alters them with more layers of spontaneous drawing, painting and printmaking techniques using various inks. MORE
