Waiting to Happen

Hannah Morris at Northern Daughters in Vergennes, Vermont, USA through 31 October 2019. Morris fabricates visual stories and scenes by arranging, refashioning, and building upon found images. The artist writes, "These pieces, created over the past half year, are emblematic of my pursuit to piece together new narratives from old images. Using figures, objects and scenes in a collage base layer comprised of bits and pieces from vintage magazines and paper detritus. I use paint to add to or remove from the visual story. At the heart of it, I want to create spaces by removing the excess from a prescribed space, animating seemingly still figures and objects, and make real what seems to be unbelievable." MORE

Tú que miras

by Manuel Luís Castro Magaz (Spain, 2018). With almost one hundred collage and decollage works, Tú que miras is the first catalog of ML Collage & Decollage, who comes from the world of the comic book and began his journey into the worlds of collage and painting. He writes, "With my work, I am fixing memories or establishing a socially conscious message that also allows me to explore introspection. To do this, I use the symbology of primary colours using my simple, personal style. My initial influences were comics and Pop Art, along with expressionism and some figurative work. I am also interested in posters and graphic design." MORE

How Memories Are Stored

Erin Houghtaling writes, "I strongly feel that our memories are stored in the manner of a collage, rather than literal images. I started making collages from my own photography and had an emotional reaction to the results, feeling the collages better represented my sentiments than the untouched original images. I transitioned to using images from discarded books and magazines. I find I can easily use these vintage images to share my experiences and emotions. I draw upon my memories of childhood and my experiences as a female and a mother as inspiration for my collages. I also touch on the vastness of space, the power of nature over man, the feeling of not quite fitting into the places we end up and finding ultimate comfort in solitude." MORE

Copy/Cut/Paste

Sarah Eyre in the Boardroom at Leeds Arts University in Leeds, England through 1 November 2019. Eyre’s current research-practice investigates the wig in its disembodied state. Wigs serve a very particular social and performative function, which is to affirm, exaggerate or disguise some aspect of the wearer’s identity, or project a new one. They are also part object, part body, and can reveal anxieties around the boundaries between the self and the outside world. MORE

In "Revolutionary Paths: Critical Issues in Collage", exhibition curator Ric Kasini Kadour presents examples of collage that represent various aspects and takes on the medium. Each work in the exhibition represents the potential for deeper inquiry and further curatorial exploration of the medium. MORE

Cultural Decontructions

Collage is unique as a medium in that it uses as its material artifacts from the world itself. To harvest those fragments, the artist must first deconstruct culture; they must select, cut, and remove the elements they do not wish to use and then reconstruct work that tells a new story. In "Cultural Deconstructions: Critical Issues in Collage", exhibition curator Ric Kasini Kadour presents examples of collage artists who are deconstructing identity as a way to critique culture.
