COLLAGE ON VIEW

Intarsia

David Crunelle at Zedes Art Gallery in Brussels, Belgium through 22 December 2019. Crunelle engages in an obsessive layering of all sorts of “stories”: postcards from the 1920s through the 1960s; decade-old pictures of New York; communist propaganda posters from China; and surprisingly, photographs from the artist’s own childhood. These collages glisten like radiant jewels. MORE

Declaration of Independence

Lari Pittman at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, California, USA through 5 January 2020. The most comprehensive retrospective in 20 years of the work of this American artist. His highly detailed works on panel and paper—grand tales about love, sex, death, art, and citizenship—feature a rich visual language that he has developed over the course of his four-decade career, replete with owls, Victorian silhouettes, flying text, and exaggerated and sexualized bodies. Reinventing the Wheel

Cut and Paste: 400 Years of Collage at Scottish National Galleries. In Kolaj 27, Editor Ric Kasini Kadour offers his take on "Cut and Paste: 400 Years of Collage" at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. He writes, "Nearly every decade or so a blue-chip museum takes up collage, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Each time claiming to have discovered this new, interesting, and overlooked medium." MORE

Some Early Visionary Americans

Lesley Dill at Arthur Roger Gallery in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA through 21 December 2019. Themes of contradiction and excess and ecstasy, activism and terrorism, stillness and chaos, repression and freedom, madness and sanity. These extremes have shaped history and fueled the creative process of both the artist and the early Americans to whom she pays homage. MORE

Weekend Plans

Matthew Rose at The New Art Museum in Karuizawa, Japan through 10 January 2020. More than fifty works on canvas and paper, as well as altered objects feature in the artist’s exploration of architectural dream spaces. The collages distill the artist’s abstract and figurative works into a surreal roman à clef, a busy, intricate and confounding autobiography of Rose’s world. MORE
