COLLAGE ON VIEW

The Auto Show

At United Contemporary in Toronto, Ontario, Canada through 29 February 2020. While not necessarily about the car as muse, the works in this exhibition reference the automobile conceptually or materially, and reflect on its influence in shaping our lives and our relation to the world we inhabit. COLLAGE BOOKS

Our Flesh Of Flames

By Theodore A. Harris and Amiri Baraka (Anvil Arts Press / Moonstone Press, 2019). “Posed against an eerily iridescent orange sky,” Harris’ collaged landscapes are filled with urban dystopia. Upside down capitols and distorted bank notes pose the reality of a society fettered by the cash nexus. MORE

SCHWITTERS ARMY

Magick Tricks, Puzzles and Joker Novelties by Tom Amoretti

SA050TA20ART. From London, the artist writes, "By nature and nurture a hoarder, I use mainly old and new magazines and books, also sometimes found objects. I am interested in creating new challenging narratives, which in many occasions escape me and are in the eye of the beholder, thus aiming to create endless interpretations. However after many years of making collages there are some obvious intertwined themes that could be summarised as looking at the human condition through a surrealist and oneiric filter." MORE

SCHWITTERS ARMY

Un tra traat tat by Tanja Ulbrich

SA066TU20ART. From Madrid, Spain, the artist writes, this collage “was created listening to “Ursonante” and made form scraps from magazines I had already cut up. A Canadian living in Spain, Ulbrich writes, “Kurt Schwitters has always been an inspiration to me because I have always been interested in experimental poetry and his work always gives me something to think about.” MORE

The Schwitters’ Army Collection of Collage Art at MERZ Gallery in Sanquhar, Scotland is a permanent collection of international collage art curated by Ric Kasini Kadour in January and February 2020. MORE
