COLLAGE ON VIEW BreakdownAt Distance Gallery in Denver, Colorado, USA, 15 June-15 July 2020. The online exhibition curated by Andrea Burgay focuses on work made through processes of fragmentation and rebuilding. The seven artists physically destroy, deconstruct and disassemble. They break down books, images, raw materials and their own artwork. The fragments that remain are resurrected and integrated, revealing the limitless possibilities of their source materials. New narratives are created, poking holes in outmoded ways of seeing the world. Reassembled, the broken pieces reveal meaning and visions, showing us ways to rebuild. MORE |

FROM THE ARTIST DIRECTORY Orchestrated ChanceSanta Fe, New Mexico, USA. Sherry Parker’s work combines meticulous execution, edgy whimsy, flares of surrealism, and witty imagination. Parker writes, “What excites me about the collage medium are the ideas that flow from chance: the serendipitous discovery of 'found' materials, the random (unconscious) selection process, the fortuitous mistakes, and the bringing together of disparate ephemera to create curious connections out of chaos.” Her work reflects her playfully irreverent response to, or perhaps refuge from, the “furious folly” of these times. COLLAGE COMMUNITIES Quebec CollageQuebec Collage promotes creativity, diversity, and art education by curating exhibitions, sharing local initiatives, connecting the local and international communities by translating open calls, and providing a safe space for people to discuss their passion for collage and their own practice. The uncertainty caused by COVID-19 makes it difficult to plan for the future, so the group’s founder, Virginie Maltais, has been focusing on short-term goals like the group’s recent call to artists for their Tissue Box Project, with over 100 collages submitted, which can be viewed on their online gallery. Meanwhile, Maltais has been making and posting collage tutorial videos, which she says has been bringing people out of the woodwork who have never done collage and are trying it for the first time. COLLAGE EVENT Virtual Advanced Collage NightWith Juan Hinojosa, 23 June 2020, 5-6PM EDT at Mandeville Gallery, Union College, Schenectady, New York, USA. Building on his virtual event in April, Hinojosa now invites participants to think about collaging with 3D objects in combination with more traditional, paper-like materials. 3D objects are fun to work with and they add complexity to a typically flat medium. The event is free and open to the public and does not require participants to join by audio or video. MORE |

FROM THE ARTIST DIRECTORY A Magpie AttitudeWeymouth, Dorset, United Kingdom. Smithsonian Rosterino has always been a collector with a magpie attitude toward inspiration. Rosterino writes, “For me it is important not to just re-present the images around me, I have to instill some meaningful discourse from my life experiences and the world I see.” The narrative is not blatantly apparent, often hidden behind un-digestible layers of scribbled out pencil scrawl, whitewashed imagery, splats of paint, and contrasting, graphically sharp shapes. COLLAGE COMMUNITIES Philadelphia CollageWorksPhiladelphia CollageWorks provides resources for personal creative growth through monthly meetings, workshops, critiques, sharing of ideas and techniques, educational programs, instructional workshops, and participation in art exhibits, conferences and retreats. The group had been meeting in person regularly until the COVID-19 pandemic required social distancing. They also had a couple of group shows scheduled that had to be cancelled or delayed. But in the face of adversity they continue to meet online, work on collage, and plan future projects. MORE |
