COLLAGE ON VIEW Pastime/Time PassedLizzie Gill & Ciara Rafferty at Roman Fine Art in East Hampton, New York through 27 June 2018. Colour-splashed retro imagery, glamourized nostalgia and leisure studies of bygone eras comprise Lizzie Gill and Ciara Rafferty’s hyper-stylized representations of wholesome values and pleasures of "The Good Old Days". Gone is the time of The Great American Vacation, with its novelty of futuristic hotels and motels that brought families together with blithe poolside lounging and Atomic Age idols. Drawing inspiration from the 1950s and 60s, a time that for many Americans represented hope, freedom and Americana portrayed through wholesome values and Hollywood romance, Gill and Rafferty explore the richly nostalgic context of the spaces and icons of these bygone eras that now exist in a liminal space: a passed-time. These sensibilities of carefree summer fun and untroubled leisure occupy the dreams and desires of our modern sensibilities as the contemporary world flies by in hyper-speed. MORE |

FROM KOLAJ #22 Melancholy & Rigorous Form"The collage art of Evan Clayton Horback comes in all sizes, but it is his smaller works that always grab my attention," writes Kevin Sampsell in Kolaj #22. "They’re made on tiny matchbooks, poster board, found objects, torn-off book covers, and other book scraps. They have the distressed look of something that could be a hundred years old or something salvaged from a house fire or plane crash. Part of the reason for the well-worn appearances of these collages is that Horback often blends partial close-ups of mysterious vintage images accented—or even scarred—with bold lines, dots, or patches of colour." COLLAGE ON VIEW Paper CutsLarge-Scale Collage at Palo Alto Art Center in Palo Alto, California, 16 June-26 August 2018. The exhibition is part of the Palo Alto Art Center’s Summer of Collage, which engages the community in exploring the creative potential of this dynamic medium. Through exhibitions, public programs, hands-on opportunities, and community partnerships, this initiative promises to introduce new audiences to the power of collage. The artists in this exhibition are breaking with tradition, rebuffing the commonly intimate scale of contemporary collage. The large scale of their work beautifully illustrates the power of the medium. MORE |

FROM KOLAJ #22 Acts of RevivalA three-story collage made of wood is on the cover of Kolaj #22. The Crystal Ship was installed in Ostend, Belgium in 2017. Etty Yaniv writes in the issue, "For the Belgian artist Stefaan De Croock, who is mainly known for his figurative compositions using scrap wood, the power of collage is in giving life to materials we collectively abandon...Overall, the found wood pieces Strook fuses in his assemblages and the imagery he depicts in his collaged paintings manifest an act of revival." FROM KOLAJ #22 Pulp CultureSome collage artists use scissors and glue, Steve Hunt uses...a blender? Few fine artists have embraced papermaking as an art medium, but as act of fragmenting and attaching, the practice may hold implications for collage. A curious example is the pulp work of Manchester, England’s Steve Hunt who has been collecting gallery flyers and literature from various cities and countries in Europe and North America In Kolaj #22, we discuss his unique approach. AT KOLAJ FEST NEW ORLEANS Collage CommunitiesSocieties, Projects, and Collaborations. Collage is more than a medium. It's a community of people, networked and international. This community doesn't just happen. It is the product of hard work by people who organize societies, open collage nights, collaborative projects. In this panel at Kolaj Fest New Orleans, we will hear from a number of organizers who work in various capacities. What makes for a successful community, collaboration, or project? What will help these efforts be more successful and develop a broader audience? How can these initiatives interact more with the art world at large? Among the presenters is Zach Collins (image here) who has participated in hundreds of collaborations with collage artists from around the world. MORE |
AT KOLAJ FEST NEW ORLEANS Biblio Excavations & Collage TechniquesBen DiNino's Collage Making Demonstration. DiNino works in excavation and concealment. He produced a series of book pieces where he cut out all the extraneous text leaving only specific images exactly where they were originally located. The pages of the textblock are sealed shut so that only the cover opens. This creates a collage that was ever-present in the book, allowing the viewer to see through the pages and look at the whole body of images the book offers. “I never know exactly how these biblio-excavations will visually culminate and it’s an exciting process to watch them divulge themselves,” said DiNino.
