FROM KOLAJ #22

Piecemeal

Selections from the Exhibition. In Kolaj 22, we reported on a remarkable exhibition of collage at the Indianapolis Art Center. Piecemeal explores interpretations of the collage medium through a curation of work dealing with dimension and interaction of shapes within physical and imagined spaces. The exhibition was curated by Kyle Herrington, the Art Center’s Director of Exhibitions & Events and featured works by artists Clarke Curtis, Andrea Myers, Cory Peeke, David Beatty, Katy Schmader, Kristy Hughes, Lydia Ricci (image here) and Sivavis. Here is a selection of five artists from the exhibition. MORE

COLLAGE ON VIEW

You Are What You Were

Trudy Borenstein-Sugiura at The Nassau Club in Princeton, New Jersey through 6 May 2018. Using her subject’s personal papers and a range of related documents, the artist renders portraits that tell stories, experience multiple aspects of a point in time, examine memory and explore cultural identity. Although the work has been shown individually in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver and the Hamptons, this collection of 31 works provides the viewer the chance to experience the pieces as building blocks to a whole in the way of seeing below the surface to reveal new perspectives. Rare Beasts

Alyson Champ at Alfred Langevin Cultural & Community Hall in Huntingdon, Quebec, Canada through 29 April 2018. The exhibition offers a series of twenty works inspired by illuminated medieval manuscripts representing twenty heritage farm animals in danger of disappearing. "When you think about endangered animals, snow leopards or the exotic birds come to mind. We do not imagine that this status could apply to farm animals. The aim of this exhibition is to provoke a debate about the consequences of the disappearance of these breeds which form our agricultural heritage," says artist Alyson Champ. MORE

Véro Federica Rigole
Destelbergen, Belgium

Acrylic painter, spray paint, canvas & card, I am a collagist using mixed media, as natural elements, scart, natural glue, nature…I follow a non-routine parcours and I keep myself a little away from the ordinary art circuit. Because of my high sensitivity, I mainly work outside with the canvas on the ground, so that the nuisance of odours is limited. I am working together with nature elements. For my smaller collages, I opt for natural glue and like to use scart. MORE

The Collage Journal

The First Decade: 2005-2015 by Peter Jacobs. On March 31, 2005, Jacobs created a collage from that day’s New York Times and has continued that process without interruption every day since. The collages are created solely from the images, colors and texts of that day’s newspaper. They are paintings with paper, theatrical stages of abstracted color and rhythms, layers that imbue surreal narratives, symbolism hidden in humor, social commentary, cultural irony, and pure visual perception. KOLAJ #22

Kolaj #22 delivers a look at the wonderful world of contemporary collage: the people who make it and the people who love it. Belgian artist Strook‘s building-sized collage is on the cover of the issue. In her profile of the artist, Etty Yaniv writes, "The found wood pieces Strook fuses in his assemblages and the imagery he depicts in his collaged paintings manifest an act of revival: allocating fragmented elements of decay by making an artistic use for them and out of them."
