Kolaj Magazine exists to show how the world of collage is rich, layered, and thick with complexity. By remixing history and culture, collage artists forge new thinking. To understand collage is to reshape one’s thinking of art history and redefine the canon of visual culture that informs the present. Controlled Madness

If totalitarianism wears a face, it’s most certainly a complex and pained one. Such a face is the work of Czech artist Jirí Kolár’s 1961 collage: A skull, its mouth agape and eyes glittering blank orbs, floating above the façade of Prague’s Kinsky Palace announcing the artist’s retrospective. One of nearly a hundred of Kolár’s most influential works produced during an era when Czechoslovakia squirmed in the fist of its repressive government, the piece is emblematic of the artist’s political import to his country. Unnoticed Urban Elements

There’s a distinct urban vibe to Chuck Scalin’s abstract collages made largely from found “trash” elements, yet they provide a calm antidote to the chaos of our world. Juxtaposed fields of subdued textures and muted colours dominate the works. However, today’s discomfort can be found creeping in. In a recent series of mixed media collages, Scalin, a Richmond, Virginia artist, has minimized the basic content to a few areas of found or drawn surfaces and mostly neutral hues. Red Ribbons Dance

Sarah Perkins references fables and folklore and she combines found imagery with her own mark making and samples from art history. Pine and holly enrobe portraits of women like festive holiday burkas. Red ribbons dance around the figures whose eyes stare at the viewer from behind their floral masks. Uncollage: An Introduction

In Kolaj #25, Todd Bartel begins the first of a four-part series exploring the notion of Uncollage. He writes, "If we know how to look for the evidence of collage’s unprecedented eclecticism—or know what to call it—then at least a few more possibilities can be pulled into the ever-expanding definition." 365 Days of Collage

An artist shouldn’t underestimate the transformative power of steady, consistent practice. There is no better way to draw that out than a challenge. In September 2017, Palm Springs artist Bonnie Denver Ruttan decided to produce one collage a day for a year. Her story appears in Kolaj #25. MORE
