COLLAGE ON VIEW Scratch the SurfaceLeigh Wells & Kate Nartker at Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco, California, USA, through 31 August 2019. Nartker and Wells use two distinct modes of visual imagery to explore the passage of time and how we interact with the world. Wells eschews clarity in order to engage with imagined mental states and what is unseen. Nartker’s film stills from personal, found, and stock footage, as well from The Library of Congress, are presented in weavings and jacquards that give us a new, surprising and tantalizing aspect of pixelation. COLLAGE EVENT Cultural DeconstructionsCritical Issues in Collage at LeMieux Galleries in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, through 27 July 2019. By its nature, the creation of art is the construction of culture. Collage is unique as a medium in that it uses as its material artifacts from the world itself. To harvest those fragments, the artist must first deconstruct culture; they must select, cut, and remove the elements they do not wish to use and then reconstruct work that tells a new story. The central exhibition at Kolaj Fest New Orleans features collage artists who are deconstructing identity as a way to critique culture. Curator Ric Kasini Kadour will give a gallery talk about the exhibition on Saturday, 27 July 2019, 1PM. MORE |
